Rich is a Service-Disabled Veteran,  with almost three decades of combat-tested military and government experience, who closed out his career as a highly decorated and capable leader in the United States Army.  His awards and decorations include the Combat Action Badge, Valorous Unit Award, Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and four Meritorious Service Medals.  Rich has operated in the most complex and stressful environments at the highest levels and is ready to provide that same dedication and commitment to our clients.

Marshall Contino

Marshall Contino

Executive Vice President

Marshall has 25 years of expertise in facilities architecture, healthcare infrastructure, and campus engineering. He manages three VA A/E IDIQs for VISN 20, 21, and 22, along with multiple contracts for the VISN’s, VACO and USACE.  Marshall has expert knowledge of the CFM TIL and FAR, and has developed trusted partner working relationships with COs, CORs and FMS leadership.  He has overseen ACC, CLC, ED, EHRM, Master Planning, Mental Health, Radiology, Specialty Care, Telehealth, and Transportation Healthcare Projects.  Marshall is a Distinguished Alumnus of Indiana University-Bloomington and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

Megan Michalak

PMP, MBA

Vice President , AE Services

Megan has 18+ years of experience in project management, healthcare facility planning, and clinical healthcare management. She has served as both a project leader and subject matter expert on projects ranging from small remodel fit outs to large construction projects exceeding $300 million with the VA, DoD, and private sector healthcare organizations. Megan's deep understanding of VA design guidelines and MIL Standard 1691, combined with her ability to anticipate healthcare organizations' operational and clinical needs, enables her to successfully lead teams through the design and construction process. Megan holds a Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science, MT (ASCP) from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and a Master of Business Administration from Midland University. She is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and Lean Healthcare professional.

Chris brings 7+ years of experience, primarily serving the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). He has a proven track record of success in leading and executing a wide range of healthcare projects, including capital planning, strategic planning, space programming, operations planning, improvement, equipment planning, and initial outfitting. Chris is a versatile and adaptable professional who can serve in any role required, from facilitator to subject matter expert to project manager.

 

 

Lorena Alvarez

Lorena Alvarez

Vice President, Facilities Services

Lorena leads the delivery of environmental, occupational health and safety, and real property due diligence services. She has over 25 years of experience supporting federal agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), in implementing programs to comply with EPA and OSHA requirements for facilities construction, operations, and maintenance. Lorena's expertise includes VA master planning, NEPA Programmatic Environmental Impact Statements, environmental compliance audits, and vacant building inventory reduction efforts. She has led more than 40 environmental compliance audits at VA medical centers and managed due diligence support for the reduction of VA's vacant building inventory, involving over 60 vacant buildings across 12 VA stations.

Jane is a retired Army Nurse, with over 40 years of experience in inpatient, outpatient, and rehabilitation care, education, and administration, Jane understands the impact of the environment of care on patients and staff. She uses her expertise to inform the design and renovation of healthcare facilities worldwide and to facilitate operational planning for modernizing and efficiently using healthcare space. Jane's collaborative communication style and clinical focus have helped her achieve success in a wide range of projects, including campus master plans, facility designs, operations modernization, change management, staff right-sizing, new service incorporation, transition planning, outfitting, orientation/education, relocation, and startup of new facilities.

Gene Klow

Principal Architect

Gene uses his 40+ years of experience in architecture and construction to support Veterans. He has led projects across the United States, Europe, Asia, South America, and the Middle East, totaling over $10 billion in construction value. Many of his projects have received local and national recognition, as well as awards for design. Prior to joining Awen, Gene was a United States Marine. He is passionate about using his skills to help Veterans. In recent years, he has planned and designed facilities for VA West Los Angeles, VA Palo Alto, VA Boise, VA Long Beach, VA Phoenix, VA Martinez, and VA Mather. Gene received his B.S. in Architecture from the University of Virginia and his Master of Architecture from Harvard University.

Director of Project Management

Amy has 13 years of experience in interior design, space planning for healthcare and commercial interiors, project management, and IOT&A. She is skilled at multitasking, meeting urgent deadlines, and working in a cross-functional business environment. Amy has extensive knowledge of IOTA projects from initial planning stages to activation for the VA. She has experience working on projects involving a variety of departments, including CLC, ED, Mental Health, Radiology, Specialty Care, Telehealth, and Executive Administration.

Manager of Design

Ben has over 20 years of combined experience in construction and architecture, with a certificate in Green Building and LEED accreditation. For the past 10 years, he has worked solely in the healthcare sector both on the client and consultant sides of project delivery. Ben holds Master of Architecture and Master of Landscape Architecture degrees from the University of Colorado - Denver.

Jennifer has over 20 years of experience in the private sector, commercial, and federal markets. Jennifer has a proven track record of success in project management, finance, due diligence, portfolio, and asset management. She is recognized as a subject matter expert on lease delegation and federal real estate policy and procedure. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia and an MBA from George Washington University.

 Sabrina has over 20 years of combined experience in architecture and interior design. Sabrina provides clients years of in-field experience at crafting technical strategy and shaping team organization towards clearly defined goals. She provides expertise in large scale architectural project design through development and construction with a background in space planning and managing complex programming and code requirements. Sabrina has prior experience in hospitality design, high-rise residential architecture, resort planning, data driven programming, branded environments, and specialty fabrication. She holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Cincinnati.

Clark has 31 years of experience in technical detailing, code analysis, project delivery, and permitting processes. He has a Bachelor of Architecture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and has worked on a variety of commercial, civic, industrial, education, and healthcare projects. Clark's expertise in technical detailing and code analysis ensures that his designs are accurate, compliant, and constructible. He is also skilled at managing complex projects and navigating the permitting process.

Clinical Operations Specialist

Rhode is a highly experienced and certified registered nurse with over 10 years of experience in inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory, and transitional care. She is passionate about using evidence-based design and her clinical expertise to inform the creation of spaces that promote the efficient use of space and maximize holistic well-being. Rhode is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts, and she is skilled in space planning, construction documents, and interior design FF&E. She is also passionate about advocating for others, particularly those in vulnerable populations.

Matt has over 10 years of hands-on experience on a range of project types. He is responsible for staffing projects, helping them get off the ground, and contributing to document quality assurance through delivery. Matt is a LEED Accredited Professional with ID+C and BD+C specialties, a WELL AP, a certified plan reviewer, and an accessibility inspector. In addition to a Master of Architecture, he holds an undergraduate degree in Neurobiology and an MBA.

 

 

Kristin Carleton

Interior Designer and Architect

Kristin is an interior designer and architect, with over 15 years of A/E expertise.  She is a licensed architect, holds a NCIDQ certification, and specializes in lighting design. Kristin has an extensive background in designing various new building projects and development of detailed final construction packages. She has supported various VISN healthcare projects and has built trusted relationships with VA’s FMS, COR, and Interior Design leadership. She has supported VA renovation and new construction projects throughout VISNs 20, 21, and 22.  Kristin most recently supported design and CPS services for VA’s National Telehealth Hub in Boise, renovations for a Specialty Care Clinic in Martinez, and EHRM/IT Modernization projects in Phoenix.

Margarita is an Architectural Technician in the healthcare industry with a passion for creating community-centered and accessible healthcare spaces. She has experience in interior design, FF&E, construction documents, and prestigious design planning. Margarita has worked on a variety of healthcare projects, including the Veterans Administration Northern California Healthcare System Master Planning and Building 650 PACT model Primary Care Clinic at Mather Campus. Margarita's capstone project is a community health center that embraces convenience and community. She is also using her analytical design-thinking skills to evaluate the state of VCU Health hospital design and other Richmond healthcare providers through a VCU arts research grant. Margarita holds a BFA in Interior Design from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts.

Bilal Hamouche

Project Engineer

Bilal is a highly skilled and experienced Construction Engineer with 4 years of experience. He began his career as a general engineering and paving contractor, where he performed estimates and project management for a wide variety of private and public works projects. He also worked in the Quality Assurance and Construction Inspection Division (QACID) at Los Angeles International Airport, where he performed inspections for a wide range of construction activities. Bilal has a strong understanding of construction plans and specifications, as well as a deep knowledge of city and county guidelines. He is also an expert in quality assurance and construction inspection. Bilal received his bachelor’s degree in construction engineering management from California State University, Long Beach.

 

Mary Kay Barrett

Mary Kay is a highly experienced and skilled Interior Designer with over 35 years of experience. She graduated from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and her career has grown with roles spanning design and project management. Mary Kay has been both a member and has managed collaborative project teams in the healthcare, commercial, industrial, and multi-family market sectors. Mary Kay understands the importance of listening to and understanding a client's goals and budget, while also ensuring that the design team brings their expertise to the project. Her communication style and empathy allow her to deal effectively with challenging projects, teams, and clients. As a result, Mary Kay has maintained several long-term client relationships and has mentored students and design professionals.

 

Timothy Truong

Interior Designer

Timothy is a highly skilled and experienced Interior Designer with over 8 years of experience in a variety of sectors, including hospitality, senior living, and healthcare. He has managed all phases of projects from concept to construction, both new-built and renovation. Timothy has a proven track record of success in delivering innovative and functional designs that meet the needs of his clients. He is proficient in AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign and Photoshop), SketchUp, Material/Furniture Specification/Sourcing, Construction Documentation, and Concept Development. Timothy is currently stationed at the VA in West Los Angeles, where he supports the planning department with all move activations, space planning, and installations for the Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLAHS). He is an asset to the VA and the GLAHS, and his expertise and dedication are essential to the success of the VA's modernization project.

Noah is a registered Engineer-in-Training in California with over 7 years of experience in civil, transportation, and architectural design. He has a proven track record of success in designing a wide range of projects, including site civil design, custom residential homes, EV charging stations, and roadway and highway projects. Noah also has experience in obtaining zoning, building/construction, and public works permits for residential, light commercial, and industrial projects from local municipalities. He has successfully coordinated phases of design with third party utility companies for project delivery. Noah is proficient in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bluebeam, MicroStation, and Microsoft Office. He received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and Master of Science in Transportation Engineering from California State University Long Beach.

Jennifer is a Senior Design Specialist with over 25 years of experience in design, contract furniture, and account management. She has a proven track record of success in delivering high-quality design solutions for healthcare, government, corporate, and higher education clients. Prior to joining Awen, Jennifer was a Senior Designer and Account Manager for a large office furniture dealership covering Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio. In this role, she provided design services for a wide range of clients, including hospitals, government agencies, corporations, and universities. Jennifer is known for her attention to detail, clear communication, product knowledge, and technical skills. She is also a proud graduate of Penn State University.

Michael is a registered Professional Engineer with extensive experience in MEP design and commissioning. He has held a variety of roles in the MEP industry, including Electrical Design Engineer, MEP Project Manager, Inspections/Commissioning Agent, and Energy Consultant. Michael has spent a large portion of his career in the competitive field of MEP design in New York City, where he has helped design a wide range of building types, including commercial, office, residential, high-rise, and institutional.

She has expertise in preparing specifications and Revit documentation for large-scale projects. In her current role, Dawn is responsible for BIM standard development and implementation, plotting and electronic file submissions, quality control for completeness and adherence to company standards, and training and providing project support to ensure BIM standards are maintained in the creation of Revit Models.

Christy has been the lead Interior Designer on many large-scale healthcare design projects for the DoD and VA.

He currently serves as Senior QC and Cost Estimating Manager for Awen VA projects in VISN 21 and VISN 22, where he oversees the quality control and cost estimation processes for a variety of complex projects, including EHRM upgrades, VA Medical Center renovations/expansions, and new VA Clinical Facilities in CA, ID, WA, and AZ. Marvin is a U.S. Army Veteran and holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design and a Master of Architecture from Texas A&M University.

Deana brings with her 15 years of experience in the interior design and AE industry. She specializes in commercial, educational, and healthcare spaces, with a particular passion for behavioral health interiors. Deana is an expert space planner and has a talent for creating innovative interiors, especially when branding is required. She has designed interiors in a variety of healthcare settings, including maternity, behavioral health, med/surge, research, step-down, and primary care units. Senior Project Manager

Gladston is a Senior Project Manager with over 40 years of experience in design and construction. He is a graduate of Auburn University School of Architecture and has been registered as an architect since 1978. Gladston began his career in the private sector, working on medical design and construction projects in the Northeast Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi areas. In 1994, he joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and subsequently the U.S. Army Health Facility Planning Agency. In these roles, he performed architectural design and project and program management on military healthcare and research facilities around the world, including the United States, Hawaii, Germany, Italy, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. Gladston is now retired from government service and is consulting, performing project management services for Awen Solutions.

Most recently she supported the Planning department in the Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLAHS), advising leadership on the modernization of healthcare facilities on the 380+ acre West LA campus, including the replacement of the 1972 Level 1a medical center.

He manages the execution of Architecture and Engineering (A&E) projects within Awen, including: The capture and development of a space inventory study, including 1.3 million square feet, across multiple locations within the VA Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS), The development of a digital portfolio management system for the VA WLA Campus, The completion of 2D and 3D modeling projects for VA Healthcare Systems across the US. Matthew is a highly skilled and experienced professional with a passion for excellence. He is committed to delivering high-quality projects on time and within budget, while maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.

Patrick is an architecture and engineering professional with 14+ years of experience. He has a proven track record of success in designing, constructing, and managing a wide range of facilities, from operating rooms to residential towers, including renovations and new construction. Patrick has worked on complex and challenging projects, including iconic and historical properties. He is skilled at managing the complexities of modernizing occupied buildings. He recently oversaw the design of a Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Hybrid Operating Room for the VA, as well as numerous outpatient departments, including Audiology, Women's Health, and an Eye Clinic. Patrick holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master of Architecture from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco.

Billie currently supports the development of space inventory for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). She has 15 years’ experience that spans across management in project delivery, operations improvement (including Lean Six Sigma), and strategic planning. Billie obtained her bachelor’s degree in English Language and Communications from Whittier College, and her Project Management Certification from Cornell University. Billie has managed various projects across the healthcare, supply chain management, and technological industries. Malik was born, raised, and currently resides in Los Angeles, CA. He received his Bachelor of Science from Cal State Long Beach and majored in Construction Engineering Management. Malik is a Project Engineer for Awen Solutions on their Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System project. He has 5+ years of experience engaging subcontractors, engineers, architects and project teams in effort to deliver construction projects on time and under budget.

Sharan has accumulated over five years of experience in operations and administration. Sharan’s skills in customer relationship management, strategic planning, and team leadership. In her role overseeing client relationships for high-revenue companies, she achieved impressive results, including team KPI improvement. Additionally, she ensured safety compliance and boosted revenue through effective team management and operational strategies. Sharan also holds an MBA in finance from Pepperdine University, further enhancing her expertise. Her track record includes successful project management and exceeding customer engagement goals.

Peter Matthews

Architect

Peter is a Licensed Architect with over 17 years of experience working on a variety of construction and project types. From an early age he built with Legos and drew floor plans of dream homes. He completed his Bachelor of Environmental Design at the University of Colorado, Boulder and went on to get his master’s in architecture from SCI-Arc in Los Angeles. While he finds passion in working on custom residential projects, he has spent most of his career excelling on larger commercial projects through all phases of design and construction. He prides himself on consultant coordination efforts and building relationships with others in the industry, believing that the more an Architect can learn about the work of his/her consultants the better a service he/she can provide to his clients.  Peter will be helping with multiple projects, including Las Vegas Roof Repair, Phoenix EHRM, and Martinsburg EHRM.

Sarmen has experience in managing concrete and steel framed constructions from bidding phase to the final proposal submission, analyzing architectural & structural plans, providing installation & shop drawings, obtaining final approvals, job site inspections, negotiating and overseeing subcontractors, communicating with owner’s representative and so forth. He is skilled in AutoCAD/3D, Catia, SOLIDWORKS, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, and Microsoft Office. One of his exceptional projects was being part of the team as a PM/PE for aluminum compound curved ceilings for GCT (Grand Central Terminal) in New York City.

 

Rick Stringer

Senior Graphic Designer

Rick has over 40 years of experience working with and for design firms. Rick began working for Corbin Design in 1992 as a production artist and illustrator. He was named Technology Director in 1994 and a Vice President in 1999. At the end of 2020, Rick left Corbin Design to concentrate on his own business. Before that, he worked as a freelance illustrator in Los Angeles and Chicago and as a production artist in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He majored in theater at Eastern Michigan University and studied illustration at Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles, California.

Marc Nathan 

Senior Project Engineer

Marc is a mechanical engineer with over 13 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. After receiving BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, he worked at Schlumberger, where he designed and managed the fabrication of high-pressure oil and gas process equipment on four continents. Marc then worked in MEP design, facilities engineering, and construction management in various industries including agriculture, manufacturing, food production, law enforcement/military, and healthcare. He worked for the Department of Defense as both a contractor and civilian employee. He has been a licensed Professional Engineer since 2015. Marc will be working with the team on the GLA-IDIQ.

Irene Bruce

Operations Analyst

Irene has 11+ years of experience in healthcare administration. Her experience includes medical coding, scheduling, accounts payable and receivable, and client relations. She has strong organizational and communication skills developed through hands-on experience in the medical field. Irene is bilingual in English and Spanish, which allows her to better serve multiple demographics. She is eager to apply her adaptability, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities to her role at Awen.

 

Anthony Chiles

Senior Project Manager

Anthony obtained his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology and has over a decade of project experience in a variety of fields. He spent six years prior to joining Awen in the Los Angeles luxury residential construction niche which elevated his understanding and execution of high-quality construction. Anthony's commitment to being attentive to the people he interacts with is a driving principle of his life and the key to his effectiveness.

 

Doug Guevara

Senior Healthcare Planner

Doug is a dedicated management executive with a strong background in healthcare experience. He has over 15 years of experience with Acute, Ambulatory, and Skilled nursing homes implementing EHR systems, Clinical workflow, and Clinical operations. Doug graduated from California State with a Bachelors in Nutritional Science and later got his Masters in Healthcare Administration.

 

Caz Rebach 

Architectural Technician

Caz is an experienced Project Analyst with a demonstrated history of working in the architecture & healthcare planning industry. Key contributor to Awen's use of digital technology on architectural / engineering / construction projects. Skilled in Revit, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, LiDAR scanning, 3D printing, and a host of Adobe & Autodesk software.
