Rich Creagh

President

Rich is a Service-Disabled Veteran,  with almost three decades of combat-tested military and government experience, who closed out his career as a highly decorated and capable leader in the United States Army.  His awards and decorations include the Combat Action Badge, Valorous Unit Award, Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and four Meritorious Service Medals.  Rich has operated in the most complex and stressful environments at the highest levels and is ready to provide that same dedication and commitment to our clients. Marshall Contino

Marshall Contino

CHMM, CEAS

Vice President

Marshall is the Vice President of Awen, with 25 years of expertise in facilities architecture, healthcare infrastructure, and campus engineering.  He manages three VA A/E IDIQs for VISN 20, 21, and 22, along with multiple contracts for the VISN’s, VACO and USACE.  Marshall has expert knowledge of the CFM TIL and FAR, and has developed trusted partner working relationships with COs, CORs and FMS leadership.  He has overseen ACC, CLC, ED, EHRM, Master Planning, Mental Health, Radiology, Specialty Care, Telehealth, and Transportation healthcare projects.  Marshall is a Distinguished Alumnus of Indiana University-Bloomington and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

Ian Musa

Senior Executive

Ian serves as a Senior Executive Advisor with Awen, leveraging his extensive experience working with U.S. Departments of Defense, Justice, and Veterans Affairs to design and implement client-centered approaches to solve the most persistent system challenges.  He is a first-generation Palestinian with a deep commitment to social, racial, and economic justice, driven and guided by his lived experience and significant system exposure.  A certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, PMP, and Service-Disabled Veteran, he is known for his highly strategic and efficient approaches to improving internal processes across large-scale, complex operations and programs for government, 501(c)(3)s, and corporations, with deep experience in Project Management, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Performance Management, Data & Analytics, Program Design, and Strategic Planning.

Lorena Alvarez

Director, Environmental, Safety, and Real Property

Lorena serves as the Director of Environmental, Safety and Real Property leading Awen’s delivery of environmental, occupational health and safety, and real property due diligence services. She has more than 25 years of experience supporting federal agencies such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) in implementing programs to comply EPA and OSHA requirements for facilities construction, operations and maintenance.  She has supported VA master planning efforts and managed the development of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for the VA West Los Angeles draft master plan.  Lorena has also led more than 40 environmental compliance audits at VA medical centers, and managed due diligence support for VA’s vacant building inventory reduction efforts for more than 60 vacant buildings across 12 VA stations.

Director, Program Operations

Mike is the Director of Program Operations for Awen Solutions Group. He has more than 30 years of expertise in life cycle health facilities management ranging from managing individual projects or healthcare facilities, from small clinics to large medical centers, to creating a reconstruction program for a national healthcare system. Mike acquired specific expertise in maintenance management, strategic health care system facilities planning, programming, design and construction planning and management, healthcare facilities management, initial outfitting, transition and activation planning and execution, and emergency preparation and response.

Jane Denio

Director, Clinical Operations

Jane serves as the Director of Clinical Operations for Awen Solutions Group.  As Awen's Clinical Operations Director and a retired Army nurse, Jane's career spans inpatient, outpatient and rehabilitation care, education and administration to inform her understanding of the environment of care impact on patients and staff.  She uses that experience to inform design and renovation of healthcare facilities and campuses worldwide and facilitate operational planning to modernize and efficiently use healthcare space. Jane has over 40 years of experience encompassing leadership roles in clinical care and operations, activation, equipment planning and project management for primary, secondary and tertiary medical facilities. Coupling clinical focus with her collaborative communication style, her expertise has facilitated highly successful campus master plans, facility designs, operations modernization, change management, staff right-sizing, incorporation of new services, transition planning, outfitting, orientation/education, relocation, and start-up of new facilities.

Gene is the Director of Healthcare Planning at Awen Solutions Group. He has 40 years of experience in architecture and construction. Gene has been responsible for the leadership on projects that have been developed throughout the United States as well as Europe, Asia, South America and the Middle East.  In his career he has been responsible for the planning, design and/or management of over 10 billion dollars worth of construction with many of these projects having received local and/or national recognition as well as awards for design. Working at Awen has now given Gene, a former Marine, the opportunity to focus his career to work in support of the Veterans. In recent years he has prepared the planning and design for facilities at VA West Los Angeles, VA Palo Alto, VA Boise, VA Long Beach, VA Phoenix, VA Martinez and VA Mather. Gene attended the University of Virginia where he received his B.S. in Architecture and a Master of Architecture from Harvard University.

Director, Studio Architecture

Matt serves as Director of Studio Architecture, staffing projects, helping them get off the ground and contributing to document quality assurance through delivery.  He has more than ten years of hands-on architecture experience on a range of project types and is a LEED Accredited Professional with ID+C and BD+C specialties, a WELL AP, a certified plan reviewer and an accessibility inspector.  In addition to a Master of Architecture, Matt holds an undergraduate degree in Neurobiology and an MBA.

 

Christy Winson

Director, Interior Design

Christy Winson is the Director of Interior Design at Awen Solutions Group. She has over 18 years of experience in the field of architectural and healthcare design, to include IOT&A.  Christy is a NCIDQ Desinger, Licensed Florida Interior Designer, and a LEED AP BD+C.  Her areas of expertise include working with the architectural team on construction documents from programming through construction, coordinating architectural and engineering drawings, space planning and selecting aesthetically pleasing building finishes.  Since 2012, Christy has been the lead Interior Designer on many large-scale healthcare design projects for the DoD and VA.  As an IOT&A Interior Designer, she has extensive experience in working closely with the client and staff in validating FFE requirements, creating comprehensive interior design packages (CIDs), working closely with the DoD or VA Interior Designers, assisting with wayfinding for signage packages, working with artwork vendors on artwork packages, and creating finish boards.

Matthew is the Director of Field Operations in Architecture & Engineering of Awen. He is a results-driven leader proven to direct large-scale, complex operations, programs, and projects from the ground up for corporations and U.S. government organizations. A certified Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) practitioner. Matthew manages execution of Architecture and Engineering (A&E) projects within Awen, including the capture and development of a space inventory study, including 1.3 million square feet, across multiple locations within VA Northern California Health Care System (VANCHCS), development of a digital portfolio management system for the VA WLA Campus, and the completion of 2D and 3D modeling projects for VA Healthcare Systems across the US.

Kate Denio

Kate DeNio, PMP

Senior Healthcare Planner

Kate has a LSS Green Belt and 8 years of experience in federal healthcare architectural planning and design, project management, and Initial Outfitting Transition & Activation (IOT&A) and currently supports the Planning department in the Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLAHS), the largest health organization in the VA.  She advises GLAHS leadership to accomplish modernization of the healthcare facilities on the 380+ acre West LA campus, including the replacement of the 1972 Level 1a medical center.  Kate represents their interests by fostering a collaborative environment for consensus development, interprets healthcare concerns for architectural solutions, facilitates project schedule integration, and furthers long-term campus space planning.  Additionally, she supports the timeline and scope management of the Enhanced Use Leases (EULs), utility infrastructure upgrades, and campus-wide construction programmed over the next 15 years.  Kate has expert knowledge of VA CFM Space Planning Criteria (SPC) and Design Guides, a working knowledge of SEPS, UFC 4-510, and ADA/ABA.

Clark is a Senior Healthcare Architect for Awen Solutions Group. He has 31 years of experience in technical detailing, code analysis, project delivery, and permitting processes. Clark obtained his Bachelor’s in Architecture from Cal Poly/SLO and has since worked on commercial, civic, industrial, education and healthcare projects.

Amos is a Senior Healthcare Architect at Awen. He is a licensed architect in the state of California with 30-years of experience mainly in healthcare acute care and outpatient facilities planning, design, and construction. He has solid experience in medical planning, medical equipment planning, facilities design and construction. His expertise includes all modalities of non-invasive imaging such as radiology, fluoroscopy, ultrasound and vascular, CT, PET CT, Nuclear Medicine SPECT-CT, MRI & FMRI.

Senior Strategic Healthcare Planner

Chris is a Healthcare Planner with over seven years in the industry, primarily in service of and for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). His healthcare experience includes a range of project types both capital and non-capital, to include long-range capital planning and business case development, strategic planning, space programming, operations planning, operations improvement (including Lean Six Sigma), equipment planning, and initial outfitting. Chris applies his versatile skill set to each unique job and serves the role that is required, whether that be facilitator, subject matter expert, project manager, portfolio manager or anything in between.

Margarita is a junior designer in the healthcare industry. Her knowledge encompasses interior design FF&E, construction documents, as well as prestigious design planning. She has provided drafting and rendering support for the Veterans Administration Northern California Healthcare System Master Planning and Building 650 PACT model Primary Care Clinic at Mather Campus. She is currently a student at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts expected to graduate Spring 2021 with a BFA in Interior Design. Her ambitions in healthcare design includes a capstone project of a community health center embracing convenience and community. Her analytical design-thinking is being utilized in a VCUarts research grant evaluating the state of VCU Health hospital design and other Richmond healthcare providers.

Rhode Baptiste

A&E Designer

Rhode is an experienced certified registered nurse with over 10 years of experience. Her career encompasses inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory, and transitional care. She has served in various capacities including care coordination, case management, clinical nurse education, and nursing administration. She enjoys integrating evidenced-based design with her clinical expertise to inform the design of spaces that promote the efficient use of space, while maximizing holistic well-being. She holds a BSN, and MSN with a concentration in Public Health Nursing Leadership, from the University of Virginia School of Nursing. She is currently a graduate student at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts, expected to graduate Spring 2021, with a MFA in Interior Design. She is skilled in space planning, construction documents, and interior design FF&E. Rhode is passionate about advocating for others, particularly those in vulnerable populations. Her capstone project focuses on the use of Supportive Design Theory to inform the design of a community-integrated mental wellness and creative arts center, to help adolescents thrive.

Mary Kay Barrett

Interior Designer

Mary Kay is an Interior Designer at Awen with over 35 years of experience. She graduated the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and her career grew with roles spanning design & project management. She has been both a member and has managed collaborative project teams in the healthcare, commercial, industrial, and multi-family market sectors. She knows the importance of listening & understanding a client’s goal and budget while ensuring the design team dives deep bringing their expertise to the project. Her communication style and empathy has allowed Mary Kay to deal with challenging projects, teams, and clients. The results are maintaining several long-term client relationships as well as mentoring students & design professionals. 

Kristin Carleton

Interior Designer and Architect

Kristin is an interior designer and architect, with over 15 years of A/E expertise.  She is a licensed architect, holds a NCIDQ certification, and specializes in lighting design. Kristin has an extensive background in designing various new building projects and development of detailed final construction packages. She has supported various VISN healthcare projects and has built trusted relationships with VA’s FMS, COR, and Interior Design leadership. She has supported VA renovation and new construction projects throughout VISNs 20, 21, and 22.  Kristin most recently supported design and CPS services for VA’s National Telehealth Hub in Boise, renovations for a Specialty Care Clinic in Martinez, and EHRM/IT Modernization projects in Phoenix.

Bilal Hamouche

Project Engineer

Bilal is a professional in the construction industry with 4 years of experience. His project engineer career began at a general engineering and paving contractor performing estimates and project management for a wide variety of private and public works projects. He analyzed plans and specifications for a plethora of unique projects while adhering to strict city and county guidelines. Bilal also worked in the Quality Assurance and Construction Inspection Division (QACID) at Los Angeles International Airport. He performed inspections for work ranging from grading, paving, drywall installation, door installation, light gauge steel framing, drilled-in-anchor installation, and fire stopping and fire protection. Bilal received his bachelor’s degree from California State University, Long Beach in Construction Engineering Management.

Noah Hamouche, MS, EIT

Project Engineer

Noah is a registered Engineer-in-Training in California. He has over 7 years of experience as a Civil Engineer in civil, transportation, and architectural design. He has spent his career designing a wide array of projects ranging from site civil design, custom residential homes, EV charging stations, and roadway and highway projects. Noah also has experience in obtaining zoning, building/construction, and public works permits for residential, light commercial, and from local municipalities. He has coordinated phases of design with third party utility companies for project delivery. He is skilled in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bluebeam, Microstation, and Microsoft Office. Noah received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and Master of Science in Transportation Engineering from California State University Long Beach.

A&E BIM Specialist

Dawn Shanley joined Awen as a BIM Specialist with 25 years of experience in architectural design and project management for industrial, commercial and government projects. She has experience in preparing specifications and Revit documentation for large scale projects. In this position, she is responsible for BIM standard development and implementation. She will provide support for plotting and electronic file submissions.  She will also provide quality control for completeness and adherence to company standards of all shop drawings produced. She will train and provide project support to ensure BIM standards are maintained in the creation of the Revit Model.

Jennifer is a Senior Design Specialist for a large government healthcare system in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Prior to joining Awen, Jennifer was a Senior Designer and Account Manager for a large office furniture dealership covering Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio.  She provided design services for many healthcare, government, corporate and higher education clients.  Jennifer has over 25 years-experience in design, contract furniture and account management.  She prides herself in her attention to detail, clear communication, product knowledge and technical skills.  Jennifer is a proud graduate of Penn State University.

Tennessee native Morgan Overholt is a graphic designer and owner of Morgan Media LLC, a design and marketing agency. Morgan has 17 years of experience in the design industry. She and her team have worked with nationally recognized clientele from all over the world, including the Centers for Disease Control Foundation (CDCF), Kimberly-Clark, and Stanley Black & Decker.

Don is a junior interior designer with five years of experience in the construction industry. He is a Detail-oriented designer who has worked on multiple product design projects for the City of Richmond. He is passionate about using design and emerging technologies to improve the lives of communities and to strengthen them from within. Michael is a registered Professional Engineer with extensive experience in MEP. His past roles include Electrical Design Engineer, MEP Project Manager, Inspections/Commissioning Agent, and Energy Consultant. Michael has spent a large portion of his career in the competitive field of MEP design in New York City. He has helped design a wide range of building types such as commercial, office, residential, high-rise, institutional, and more.

Timothy Truong

Interior Designer

Timothy is an interior designer based in Los Angeles. With over 8+ years of experience, he holds a broad knowledge within various design sectors such as hospitality and senior living. Ranging from medium to large scale projects, Timothy has managed all phases from concept to construction; both new-built or renovation. Approaching healthcare design, he offers his extensive knowledge in AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite (especially InDesign and Photoshop), SketchUp, Material/Furniture Specification/Sourcing, Construction Documentation and Concept Development. Currently stationed at the VA in West Los Angeles, his focus is to support the planning department with all move activations, space planning, and installations for the Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLAHS).

Katherine Sing

Katherine brings over 17 years of experience working in the private and public sectors. Her time includes working for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Palo Alto and Mather, CA.  As a Designer and Supervisory FF&E manager, Katherine has extensive experience on the design, planning, procurement, and activations of both small and large scale projects, to include the VA-DoD Outpatient Clinic in Monterey, the San Jose VA Clinic, operating suite renovations, pharmacy renovations, research labs, and administrative spaces.  Prior to that she worked at a furniture dealership supporting corporate accounts, with a focus on architectural modular wall systems.  She is a San Francisco State University Alum and enjoys traveling and spending time with her family

Gene Ullery-Smith has used his 20-year career to focus on design solutions for the built environment — demystifying complex environments including medical facilities, campuses, cultural centers, trail networks and city centers. His pragmatic and user-centered approach to environmental graphic design delivers logic-based and effective wayfinding programs. He is an alumni of Ferris State University College of Business and Kendall College of Art and Design.

Doug is a Senior Architectural Technician with Awen Solutions Group and has over 20 years of experience in the Architectural Industry. His main responsibilities will be helping to create Construction Documents utilizing Revit and/or AutoCAD.  He will also perform drawing reviews to ensure the project is complying with jurisdictional requirements and building codes. Doug will also help perform Construction Administration duties during the construction of the project.

Clarisa Castor

Senior Real Property Specialist

Clarisa has 20+ years of experience in commercial real estate, both in asset management and property management. She holds an MBA and a BS in Business Management. She also obtained a Broker Associate license in Colorado. She has served as a Contracting Officer for the Postal Service. She has experience in Federal building easements/Right-of-ways, federal contracts, high level negotiation skills. She also has experience managing retail properties internationally that include France, Germany, and Canada. Speaking of herself “I take pride in everything I do, especially when it comes to representing someone else’s interest. I strive to demonstrate the highest level of integrity and commitment and to bring a little fun to every real estate transaction.” Her siblings and herself are first generation Americans and speak fluent Spanish, their native language. Both her parents are immigrants from Mexico. As a Denver nativer, her hobbies include Denver Broncos, family, summer days, travel and she spends a lot of her spare time volunteering for the homeless of Denver.

Stacey is a member of the Environment and Safety Team at Awen.  She has 25 years of experience in the field of Environmental and Occupational Safety and Health consulting, where she specializes in policy assessment and governance compliance.  Stacey is a subject matter expert in the field of Industrial Hygiene and has worked closely with clients at all levels within the US government developing policy guidance and solving compliance issues.  She has career-long experience adapting to quickly evolving emerging issues including pandemic response, budget crises, and emergency response within the context of EOSH.  She is a graduate of Auburn University and the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health.  Stacey holds the designations of Certified Industrial Hygienist and Certified Safety Professional.

Christina is our Realty Specialist and has over 25-years of experience in the real estate industry.  Over the past several years she has applied her experience in support of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).  Her experience with Title, Survey, and Appraisal has made a good fit in due diligence activities for land and easement acquisitions.  Christina is also well versed in the rules and regulations of the DOJ 2016 Title Standards.  She provides support services for VA’s records management initiative, land and easement acquisitions, as well as reviewing and preparation of Revocable Licenses, Congressional Reporting, Solicitations, and Leases in compliance with the West Los Angeles Leasing Act.

Jennifer is a Manager in Awen’s Real Estate practice. She has over 20 years of expertise in private sector commercial and federal real estate, with experience in project management, finance, due diligence, portfolio, and asset management. Jennifer currently serves as Project Manager for a real estate services contract with the Department of Veterans Affairs.  In this role, she serves as a subject matter expert on lease delegation and federal real estate policy and procedure. Jennifer holds a BA from the University of Virginia and an MBA from The George Washington University.

Deputy Project Manager

Marvin is a Registered Architect and Certified Construction Manager with over thirty-five years of experience in management of construction, architecture, and engineering services for major projects in government, institutional, and commercial sectors.  He currently serves as Senior QC and Cost Estimating Manager for Awen VA projects in VISN 21 and VISN 22. Recent projects include EHRM upgrades, VA Medical Center renovations/expansions, and new VA Clinical Facilities in CA, ID, WA, and AZ. Marvin is a U.S. Army Veteran and received Bachelor of Environmental Design and Master of Architecture from Texas A & M University.

Deana Acheson

Project Manager

Deana is a Project Manager for Awen Solutions Group. She has 15 years of experience in many facets of the Interior Design and A/E Industry. Deana's expertise lies within the Commercial, Educational, and Healthcare spaces. She has a particular passion and interest in Behavioral Health Interiors and is always inspired by the user groups at the VA. She has developed interior specifications for the K-12 Behavioral Health market and can be seen proudly carrying around the VA TIL catalog for easy reference. Deana is an expert space planner and has a talent for creating innovative Interiors, especially when branding is required. In the Healthcare market, she's designed Interiors in the Maternity, Behavioral Health, Med/Surge, Research, Step Down, and Primary Care Units. Most importantly, Deana cares for client relationships deeply and takes great attentiveness in making sure lines of communication are open, clear, and respected.

Amy is a Project Manager and Senior Interior Designer for Awen, and she has 13 years of expertise in Interior Design, including Space Planning for Healthcare and Commercial Interiors, Project Management, and IOT&A. Amy possess an ability to multi-task, meet urgent deadlines, and work in a cross-functional business environment. Amy has extensive knowledge IOTA projects from initial planning stages to activation for the VA. Including projects involving departments such as CLC, ED, Mental Health, Radiology, Specialty Care, Telehealth, and Executive Administration. This consisted of validating needs through User Group Meetings, and utilizing expert knowledge of materials, fabrics, colors, design schemes, patterns, and applications in healthcare, used to develop specifications.

Gladstone R Hall, R.A.R

Project Manager

Gladston has over 40 years of experience in the field of Medical Architecture Design and Construction. A Graduate of Auburn University School of Architecture, first Registered in Architecture in 1978, he worked in the private sector in Architectural firms until 1994 specializing in medical design and construction in the N.E. Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi areas. Joined the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and subsequently the U.S. Army Health Facility Planning Agency, performing Architectural design and Project and Program Management on Military Healthcare and Research facilities in The United States, including Hawaii, Germany, Italy, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. Gladston retired from Government Service and is now consulting, performing Project Management Services for AWEN Solutions.

He has experience designing, constructing, and managing diverse facilities from operating rooms to residential towers, including renovations and new construction.  Patrick has worked on challenging iconic and historical properties, and is skilled at managing the complexities of modernizing occupied buildings.  He has recently overseen the design of a Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Hybrid Operating Room for the VA, as well as numerous outpatient departments, including Audiology, Women’s Health, and an Eye Clinic.  Patrick has a degree in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Master of Architecture from the California College of the Arts in San Francisco.

Megan is a Project Manager at Awen Solutions Group. She has 18 years of experience in project management,  healthcare facility planning and clinical healthcare management as both a project leader and subject matter expert. Megan’s project experience varies from small remodel fitouts to large construction projects that exceed $300 million with the VA, DoD, and private sector healthcare organizations.  These past projects have made her well versed in the VA design guidelines and the MIL Standard 1691. Megan has the ability to anticipate healthcare organization’s operational and clinical needs to successfully lead teams through the process of design and construction. Megan is a graduate of both the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Midland University and holds degrees in Clinical Laboratory Science, MT (ASCP) and a Masters in Business Administration. She is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and obtained a Lean Healthcare certification through the University of Michigan.

Natalie has a Bachelors of Science in Economics, and Health Management and Policy. Her educational history combined with her diverse background in business management, marketing and communications developed her creativity to look for new perspectives and solutions.
