Marshall Contino

Marshall has 25 years of expertise in facilities architecture, healthcare infrastructure, and campus engineering. He manages three VA A/E IDIQs for VISN 20, 21, and 22, along with multiple contracts for the VISN’s, VACO and USACE. Marshall has expert knowledge of the CFM TIL and FAR, and has developed trusted partner working relationships with COs, CORs and FMS leadership. He has overseen ACC, CLC, ED, EHRM, Master Planning, Mental Health, Radiology, Specialty Care, Telehealth, and Transportation Healthcare Projects. Marshall is a Distinguished Alumnus of Indiana University-Bloomington and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

Megan Michalak

Megan has 18+ years of experience in project management, healthcare facility planning, and clinical healthcare management. She has served as both a project leader and subject matter expert on projects ranging from small remodel fit outs to large construction projects exceeding $300 million with the VA, DoD, and private sector healthcare organizations. Megan's deep understanding of VA design guidelines and MIL Standard 1691, combined with her ability to anticipate healthcare organizations' operational and clinical needs, enables her to successfully lead teams through the design and construction process. Lorena Alvarez

Lorena leads the delivery of environmental, occupational health and safety, and real property due diligence services. She has over 25 years of experience supporting federal agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), in implementing programs to comply with EPA and OSHA requirements for facilities construction, operations, and maintenance. Lorena's expertise includes VA master planning, NEPA Programmatic Environmental Impact Statements, environmental compliance audits, and vacant building inventory reduction efforts. She has led more than 40 environmental compliance audits at VA medical centers and managed due diligence support for the reduction of VA's vacant building inventory, involving over 60 vacant buildings across 12 VA stations.

Jane is a retired Army Nurse, with over 40 years of experience in inpatient, outpatient, and rehabilitation care, education, and administration, Jane understands the impact of the environment of care on patients and staff. She uses her expertise to inform the design and renovation of healthcare facilities worldwide and to facilitate operational planning for modernizing and efficiently using healthcare space. Jane's collaborative communication style and clinical focus have helped her achieve success in a wide range of projects, including campus master plans, facility designs, operations modernization, change management, staff right-sizing, new service incorporation, transition planning, outfitting, orientation/education, relocation, and startup of new facilities.

Gene Klow
Principal Architect
Gene uses his 40+ years of experience in architecture and construction to support Veterans. He has led projects across the United States, Europe, Asia, South America, and the Middle East, totaling over $10 billion in construction value. Many of his projects have received local and national recognition, as well as awards for design. Prior to joining Awen, Gene was a United States Marine. He is passionate about using his skills to help Veterans. In recent years, he has planned and designed facilities for VA West Los Angeles, VA Palo Alto, VA Boise, VA Long Beach, VA Phoenix, VA Martinez, and VA Mather. Gene received his B.S. in Architecture from the University of Virginia and his Master of Architecture from Harvard University.

Amy has 13 years of experience in interior design, space planning for healthcare and commercial interiors, project management, and IOT&A. She is skilled at multitasking, meeting urgent deadlines, and working in a cross-functional business environment. Kristin Carleton

Kristin is an interior designer and architect, with over 15 years of A/E expertise. She is a licensed architect, holds a NCIDQ certification, and specializes in lighting design. Kristin has an extensive background in designing various new building projects and development of detailed final construction packages. She has supported various VISN healthcare projects and has built trusted relationships with VA’s FMS, COR, and Interior Design leadership. Margarita has worked on a variety of healthcare projects, including the Veterans Administration Northern California Healthcare System Master Planning and Building 650 PACT model Primary Care Clinic at Mather Campus. Margarita's capstone project is a community health center that embraces convenience and community. Bilal is a highly skilled and experienced Construction Engineer with 4 years of experience. He began his career as a general engineering and paving contractor, where he performed estimates and project management for a wide variety of private and public works projects. He also worked in the Quality Assurance and Construction Inspection Division (QACID) at Los Angeles International Airport, where he performed inspections for a wide range of construction activities. Peter Matthews

He completed his Bachelor of Environmental Design at the University of Colorado, Boulder and went on to get his master’s in architecture from SCI-Arc in Los Angeles. Rick Stringer

Rick has over 40 years of experience working with and for design firms. Rick began working for Corbin Design in 1992 as a production artist and illustrator. He was named Technology Director in 1994 and a Vice President in 1999. At the end of 2020, Rick left Corbin Design to concentrate on his own business. Before that, he worked as a freelance illustrator in Los Angeles and Chicago and as a production artist in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He majored in theater at Eastern Michigan University and studied illustration at Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles, California.

Marc Nathan
Senior Project Engineer
Marc is a mechanical engineer with over 13 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. After receiving BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin, he worked at Schlumberger, where he designed and managed the fabrication of high-pressure oil and gas process equipment on four continents. Marc then worked in MEP design, facilities engineering, and construction management in various industries including agriculture, manufacturing, food production, law enforcement/military, and healthcare. He worked for the Department of Defense as both a contractor and civilian employee. He has been a licensed Professional Engineer since 2015. Marc will be working with the team on the GLA-IDIQ.

Irene Bruce
Operations Analyst
Irene has 11+ years of experience in healthcare administration. Her experience includes medical coding, scheduling, accounts payable and receivable, and client relations. She has strong organizational and communication skills developed through hands-on experience in the medical field. Irene is bilingual in English and Spanish, which allows her to better serve multiple demographics. She is eager to apply her adaptability, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities to her role at Awen.

Anthony Chiles

Anthony obtained his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology and has over a decade of project experience in a variety of fields. He spent six years prior to joining Awen in the Los Angeles luxury residential construction niche which elevated his understanding and execution of high-quality construction. Anthony's commitment to being attentive to the people he interacts with is a driving principle of his life and the key to his effectiveness.

Doug Guevara
Senior Healthcare Planner
Doug is a dedicated management executive with a strong background in healthcare experience. He has over 15 years of experience with Acute, Ambulatory, and Skilled nursing homes implementing EHR systems, Clinical workflow, and Clinical operations. Doug graduated from California State with a Bachelors in Nutritional Science and later got his Masters in Healthcare Administration.

Caz Rebach
Architectural Technician
Caz is an experienced Project Analyst with a demonstrated history of working in the architecture & healthcare planning industry. Key contributor to Awen's use of digital technology on architectural / engineering / construction projects. Skilled in Revit, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, LiDAR scanning, 3D printing, and a host of Adobe & Autodesk software.
